How absolutely annoying is it to post something on your Facebook business page and it only reach a few people?! It is one of the most frustrating things to see that your posts are only reaching a tiny fraction of the people that ‘like’ your page. Facebook is making things incredibly tricky for all of us business owners. They have recently come out with the ability for business owners to boost their posts to reach a larger audience. Is this free? Nope. Facebook is charging business pages to boost their posts. The cost is directly related to how many people they anticipate your post to be shared with. If you only want to spend a few dollars Facebook lets you know upfront that you’ll be reaching a lot less people than if you’re willing to throw a couple hundred dollars at your post. Since Facebook launched their ability for business owners to boost’ their posts, they have made it difficult for posts to succeed and increase their reach on their own (without forking out money to boost each post you put up on your page).
So is there a secret way to increase how many people your posts reach WITHOUT paying Facebook? There is honestly no way to completely avoid Facebook’s lack of boosting posts that aren’t paid for, HOWEVER, I have found one little trick that has greatly increased the amount of people that see my posts. The best part about it–it’s FREE!
I’ve found that the best way to boost my own posts (and save all my moolah) is to tag as many people as I can in my posts. Obviously you want to keep the tags relevant to who’s in the picture, but tag away! I recently had the most eye-opening experience with just how much tagging clients in your photos can increase your post reach.
Last week I photographed the cutest, most roly-poly, six month old baby girl. I posted one sneak peek from this session and the mom immediately tagged herself, her husband, and some other family members (seven people total). I didn’t even have to ask her or tag her myself–my clients really are that fabulous. Anyway over night this post reached more people than the amount of people that ‘like’ my photography page. Details? I am a fairly new photographer still and at this moment have 930 ‘likes’ on my photography page. Since Facebook launched their craziness trying to get me to pay to boost my own work, my posts have been reaching just a couple hundred of those 930 people. This specific post, however, has a current reach of 1,927 people. That post has reached over double the amount of people that ‘like’ my page. Think the tagging is just a coincidence? I posted another photo from this same family, didn’t tag anyone, and it has a current reach of 239 people. Crazy right?!
If you want to increase the amount of people seeing what you post to your photography page, I HIGHLY recommend tagging your clients. Another great way to increase your post reach is to encourage your clients to tag whoever they’d like in their photos. Ask them to tag themselves (if you haven’t already tagged them) and any other family members or friends that they think you enjoy seeing their photos. The more people tagged in your photos/posts, the greater the chance is of more people seeing them. Now, now, don’t go tag crazy and tag a gazillion people in everything you post, but tag your clients and encourage them to tag their family and friends.
One little note about this tagging business, Facebook is making it more difficult to tag people in your posts. Annoying right? BUT, there’s a way around that one as well. Currently when you post a photo to the wall your business page, you aren’t able to tag anyone. Facebook won’t let you. You’re still able to tag people in pictures you post in albums on your page, but not posts made directly to your wall. The trick is to post the photo, refresh your business page, and then go back into the picture and tag your clients. Facebook has nothing on us photographers 😉
So, get to posting, and tag tag tag away!!!
